Money magazine ranked Carrollton as the 19th best place to live in the United States and the 15th best place to live among small cities. The city spans over 37.1 square miles (96.1 km2) and is comprised of parts of Denton County, Collin County, and Dallas County. In 1888, the St. Louis Southwestern Railway crossed the Katy River and paved the way for the growth of Carrollton. Soon after, the city became a major shipping center for cotton, grain, and livestock. In 1912, a gravel industry was established, and the population reached 138,892 by the year 2000. In the postwar years, Carrollton worked to attract major industries, including National Metal Products. The city's median household size is 2.8. The city's population is predominantly white with a small Hispanic community (32.6%), but there are also many black and Asian residents, though they are outnumbered by the latter.
